What are the different types of EV chargers?
3 main charging types exist for EV’s and they are categorized as follows:
Level 1– these are the most basic chargers that many of us with EV’s would use at home, they have a standard 10 AMP or in some cases a 15 AMP plug. They are compact and convenient, but due to the limited power available from socket outlets, they are very slow, usually having outputs in the range of 2 or 3 KW AC, meaning charge times of many hours or even multiple days depending on the vehicle.
Level 2– these are a big step up from level one chargers in terms of power and therefore speed. They are common in businesses and at public charging stations, some may even be lucky enough to have enough power, and not to mention off street parking, to allow the installation of one of these units at home. Level 2 chargers are usually hard wired, with inputs ranging from 16-32 amps, and outputs ranging from around 7kw up to 22kw AC, however anything larger than the 7KW models will usually require a 3 phase, 415V supply, something most homes will not have access to. The largest 22KW models can charge certain vehicles in just 3-4 hours.
Level 3- these are the big dogs of charging, they range in outputs from 50 up to 350KW, and this is a huge amount of power. These chargers are very large and heavy, requiring hundreds of AMPs of input current, and easily costing 6 figures. For these reasons, they are not suited to home charging, but usually found at public charging stations. Their outputs are also DC unlike the aforementioned level 1 and 2 chargers, and can often fully charge vehicles in well under an hour.
What's the difference between AC and DC charging?
No, we are not discussing the ‘current wars’ of the 1890’s, but rather the impact of this difference on EV charging today. While I said that level 2 charging can charge at up to 22KW, there is a caveat to this, a 22KW charger may only be able to charge certain vehicles at 11 or even 7KW. Why? Well the output of these chargers is AC, but your cars system relies on storing energy in batteries which operate with DC, so it is necessary to have a converter between the AC input from the charger, and the vehicles batteries. Therefore, more premium models such as some from tesla or BYD can accept the full 22KW AC power output of the charger, were as more budget brands may only allow 7KW. There are a number of reasons for this, such as cost obviously, but also weight and heat dissipation. So before installing chargers, it is worth checking your vehicles capacity.
Level 3 DC chargers, or fast chargers as they are also known do all of this work for the vehicle, and put power straight into the cars batteries, the only limit on DC charging is usually the battery packs construction and ability to dissipate the heat of fast charging. Nearly all new vehicles can charge at 50KW DC or more, again some premium models are capable of accepting 300KW+ charging power.

How long does it take to charge my EV with a mobile service?
Most of our mobile charging vehicles are equipped with the latest 60KW dual-port DC fast chargers. These are capable of delivering up to 60KW of power to a single vehicle, or simultaneously charging two vehicles at 30KW each. Generally, at 60KW, most vehicles can charge from nearly 0% to 80% in about 40 minutes or less. However, charging times may vary due to several vehicle-specific features such as battery capacity (KW/h), the level of charge remaining in your battery, and your car’s maximum charging capacity. What if my electric vehicle needs a charge in an emergency situation?
Our services include emergency charging assistance. If you find yourself low on battery and unable to reach a stationary charging station, you can request an emergency charge, and a mobile charger will be dispatched to your location to provide enough power to get you to your destination or a charging station.
